Excited and nervous about going into labor? Due date approaching? Wondering what to pack? We asked our mothers the list of essential items, and their experiences, as a result, here’s a list of items you need to have with you in your pregnancy bag!

When To Pack?

Just in case your baby comes before or after the due date, it’s ideal to start packing when you’re 34 weeks pregnant. This will help you set up for the delivery and labor and can prevent any last-minute rushes.

What To Pack In Hospital Bag for Mom

Initially, start packing for yourself!

  • Documents: Take important documents such as birth plans, ID, medications list, hospital registration forms.
  • Cash: Do not bring in stacks of cash! Keep some cash and change with you for last-minute payments or a snack from the vending machine.
  • Comfortable clothes for delivery and breastfeeding: You can wear a robe or a cute pajama set according to your taste. You can wear a hospital gown if you like. If you are not into hospital gowns, make sure to call the hospital and ask if it’s compulsory to wear hospital gowns. If not you can choose your own gown which you feel comfortable in.
    A robe is another comfortable piece for walking around or going back home.

 Pack a nursing bra if you are planning to breastfeed. Nursing bras are comfortable to breastfeed, easy to sleep in.
However, do not forget to pack pairs of underwear which are a must in every hospital bag.

  • Socks and Slippers: Safety matters, so make sure you buy heavy socks or non-slippery socks or slippers. A very useful item, useful for showers, walking down the hallways, and going back home
  • Basic Necessities: Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, hand wash, shampoo, conditioner, lip balm, hair ties, face wipes are a must-have in your pregnancy bag. Do not forget this!
  • Cell phone, Camera, Chargers: Capture the moment! Seize every moment by clicking pictures, giving an update that you’re going into labor on your social media, and much more. Keep your phone backed up and fully charged always.
    Tip: Have a long cable wire for charging because hospital beds are placed far away from plug points.
  • Nipple cream: Your nipples will thank you later! Use a nipple cream if you’re planning to breastfeed.
  • Towels and Pillows: Ohbaby parents recommend carrying soft pillows to relax because hospital pillows can turn out to be uncomfortable. Do not even fail to think of carrying extra towels because the one we bring can be extremely hygienic and soft.
  • Pads and Adult Diapers: You can use pads or diapers after delivery. You can bring thin pads from home as you like. After delivery, you’ll need these so definitely pack them in according to your preference.
  • Homecoming Outfit For You: You need to pack for an outfit right after your delivery. You’ll still look 4 months even though you bought a human into this world, so pack a pair of maternity clothes in your pregnancy bag.

What To Pack In Hospital Bag for Baby

  • Homecoming Outfit For The Baby: An emotional and intriguing moment! The clothes you picked for your baby for the first time play a special moment here. Pick two clothes of different size such as newborn and 0-3 months. Make sure you pick according to the climate conditions.
  • Car Seat: Make sure to install a car seat prior to the delivery.
  • Bottles: If you have plans to breastfeed or formula feed, make sure to carry clean bottles in your pregnancy bag.
  • Napkins and Towels: Carry washed towels and napkins for the baby. Make sure they’re gentle and not too harsh for the baby’s skin. 
  • Electrical / Manual Breast Pump: Breast pumps, electrical or manual are hassle-free products for mothers who struggle while pumping breasts for milk. It can save up a lot of work and time.
